My name is Janine and I’m calling this blog the “Haole Girl Gourmet.” In today’s Hawaii “haole” means“white/caucasian,” somebody who looks like I do. I cook fresh, tasty, casual gourmet food. I love to cook with and for my friends and family. I’m not afraid of rich ingredients like butter and cream, and I love cheese of all kinds. But, I also strive to eat in a heath-conscious manner and I make good use of the farmer’s markets as well as my mother’s garden. I eat just about everything, but you’ll find my cooking leaning away from red meats and prepared foods, and towards seafood and fresh veggies. If pressed to define my style of cooking I’d have to say that it comes closest to the “Mediterranean Diet” in substance and style.
I live in urban Honolulu and embrace the food culture here. You will find me cooking Thai green curry, Asian stir-fry, chicken parmesan with garlic bread, chocolate cupcakes, french onion soup, tagine dishes, Indian chutney, creme brulee, potato salad and apple pie. My cooking styles are as varied as the influences by which I’m surrounded.
I’m fortunate to have a wonderful little kitchen. It is well-designed and makes good use of all the space available. I moved in to my condo in April 2009, and have been in love with my kitchen ever since. It has enough cabinet space to tuck away gadgets and pantry items; enough counter space to spread out (but not too much!); new appliances; and lots of light!
In my “real life” I am the Theatre Manager for Hawaii Pacific University’s Theatre, as well as a freelance Lighting Designer. I work in the Honolulu community theatre scene, and have won awards for my designs. But, when I come home and need to relax and clear my head of the ins and outs of the entertainment industry, I always turn to the kitchen. Cooking makes me feel better, makes me enjoy the pleasures of life. I love to eat good food, and I love to cook it!
